The Northern Triangle

Guatemala:
Guatemala is the most northern country of the Northern triangle with a 2020 estimated population of 15,432,000. Its GDP per capita is 4,619.99 USD, which is the highest in the region. Guatemala gained its independence from Spain in the 1820s and endured many different dictatorial and authoritarian regimes until it finally fell under a democratic government in 1985. After suffering a CIA-backed coup that led to a 36-year long civil war ending in 1996, Guatemala continues to slowly recover and build up, however is still seeing the results of this war in poverty, femicide, declining government legitimacy, gang violence, and hunger.

Honduras:
Honduras is situated between its two fellow Northern Triangle Countries, Guatemala and El Salvador with a 2020 estimated population of 9,305,000. Its GDP per capita is 2,574.91 USD, the lowest in the Northern triangle. Honduras gained its independence from Spain at the same time as its neighbors El Salvador and Guatemala in 1821 and has also had its fair share of a rocky history in their government. They were ruled by military governments until 1963 but continued to lack legitimacy due to the constant changes of power and overthrowing of political leaders. Today, Honduras plays a large role in international drug trafficking, corruption is rampant within their police and governmental systems, poverty continues to increase, and gang violence and femicide seem to have taken over the country. Many experts claim that these issues have grown worse after the 2009 coup that ousted democratically elected President Manuel Zelaya.

El Salvador:
El Salvador, the smallest yet most densely populated country of the Northern Triangle is located between the southern borders of Honduras and Guatemala. In 2020, its estimated population was 6,764,000 with its GDP per capita at 4,187.25 USD. El Salvador, like Honduras and Guatemala, gained its independence from Spain in 1821 but has endured an intense and violent history since then. The country had been ruled under an oligarchic system until things spiraled under control, leading to their United States-funded 12-year civil war that ended up with 1.5% of the population being killed and thousands more being displaced in the United States and Canada. These displaced immigrants formed gangs in the United States and were eventually being deported, bringing back the violence to their country where they still see its impacts today.
